Laura U Interior Design has flourished as a leading firm in the design world, being included on Luxe magazine’s National Gold List, winning Best of Houzz, and holding over 20 awards from the American Society of Interior Designers. It’s founder, Laura Umansky, brings a polished style that effortlessly blends modern compositions with classic elements to create her own unique look. We spoke to Laura about her signature style and her upcoming design projects.
What is “Classically Current”?
Classically Current© describes the luxurious livability we create within all of our interiors—spaces that are grand, but also grounded. It is the careful balance of creating an aesthetic that is playful and whimsical, yet sophisticated and refined. Our Classically Current designs—which ultimately represent a unique collaboration with each client—create well-tailored, inviting environments that are, above all, unforgettable.
You’re known for your large-scale, turn-key design services. Why does this work for you and your firm?
At Laura U, our goal is for the entire home to feel cohesive, like one beautiful novel with different chapters. While designing one room at a time is fun, we find that our clients are happiest when we consider the rooms as one continuous and connected design thought.
What’s your favorite kind of design project to work on?
I love all of our projects but I really enjoy large scale renovations! To take a home that has wonderful character and great bones, but needs updating (or a complete overhaul), and make it even better is truly rewarding.
How often do you source antiques or vintage pieces in your designs? Why?
We use antiques and vintage pieces in nearly every project. Our clients appreciate our Classically Current aesthetic because it looks to history and precedent, but incorporates the past in a very updated way. My own home incorporates quite a lot of vintage and antique pieces. I love the character and story each item brings.
What kinds of pieces do you seem to use time and time again?
Custom upholstery finds its way into each and every interior. While we have our go-to heirloom furniture makers, there is always a special space in every home that needs the perfect, custom piece.
Congratulations on opening a second office in Aspen! So, tell us: why Aspen?
My family and I love Aspen! A lot of Texans spend time in Colorado, especially during the summer months to escape the heat. We did our first project there for a Houstonian in 2013 and just never left!
What kinds of other projects are you working on?
We are currently working on several secondary home projects outside of Texas: Aspen, Carmel by the Sea, New York City. I love to travel for design inspiration so these projects are near and dear to me!
