When it comes to outdoor design, Jan Vrana makes it look easy. As a blogger, designer, and all-around garden enthusiast, Jan spends several months before summer prepping her garden and patio to create a truly ethereal outdoor escape. Her popular blog, The French Tangerine is filled with inspirational photos of antique garden décor, gorgeous greens, and lovely summer garden parties. “To me, there is nothing more relaxing and enjoyable than spending time with my family and friends in a beautiful and serene space. The sound of the fountain, the birds chirping, and some charming patio décor, and I’m a happy girl,” says Jan. We asked her to give us a few tips on how to create our own garden oasis with antique garden décor. Here are the eight essential garden pieces Jan swears by.
1. Planters and Urns
This one is a given. Outdoor urns and planters are must-haves for a proper garden. The trick is to place them close to a window in order to make them visible from the inside as well as outside. “I love having a special planter in my dining room window that can be enjoyed inside and out!” says Jan.
2. Decorative Containers
Jan uses the containers she has for fruit in the kitchen and gets creative with them for alfresco dining. “I especially love creating charming vignettes with unique and special containers” she says.
“I have always been obsessed with pottery.” Jan displays her pottery out on the patio for an organic addition to the decor.
4. Outdoor Pillows
A colorful outdoor pillow provides just that right amount of pop and visual interest in a outdoor living space. Jan’s love of gardens and antiques has led her to open up her online shop with gorgeous finds, including beautiful and colorful custom pillows.
5. Garden Benches
“A garden is simply not complete without a charming bench!” says Jan. Placing a bench at the far-end of the garden provides a perfect destination point for someone walking through. Jan’s favorite are from her faux bois collection.
6. Outdoor Dining Table
Jan says she sometimes asks herself if the time and effort getting the patio in shape for the summer is worth it. “I wonder about this until we sit down for that first meal on the patio. Then I know for sure all that work is definitely worthwhile!” she says. An outdoor dining table is a must.
7. Colorful Majolica
8. Patterned Tablecloths
When it comes to outdoor entertaining, a tablecloth with a gorgeous pattern goes a long way. Here are a few scenes from some of Jan’s patio entertaining.
