What is Pinterest?
Pinterest is like a virtual cork board that allows people to find, post and curate images from across the web. Unlike other photo sharing sites, the emphasis here is on the discovery and curation of other people’s content, as well as adding and promoting your own.
You can easily post images from any website to your Pinterest pages, or you can just browse the Pinterest platform to discover, like, and “repin” content that others have already posted.
This visual aspect of the site is one reason why Pinterest has captured the interest of so many people, from retailers to photographers and designers. Businesses can use it as a portfolio or product catalog; Customers and clients can gather the products they love and want to use. And their friends can further the endorsement by “pinning” the pictures to their own walls.
Why Should I Use Pinterest?
It is estimated that there are close to 70 million Pinterest users worldwide, and about 50 million of those users are in the United States. That’s significant. Pinterest is growing visits by an average of 66% per year and drives more traffic to sites than Facebook, at a better cost.
So how can you use Pinterest to your advantage?
1. Promote Your Storefront or Website
When you pin items from your own website, or from your HighBoy storefront, to your account, you’re creating much higher visibility for your items and for your company. You want to get products in front of new eyes to increase your exposure. The more people who see and share a pin, the more attention it receives. The effect is viral.
2. Find and Follow Others
Pinterest is an “open” social networking site, which means you can find and follow anyone. You can follow your favorite friends, vendors, designers and magazines—who all provide great content to pin and share with others.
3. Get Inspired—It’s Visual!
Pinterest to great for visual people, and we are in a visual industry! Pinterest can be used to build mood boards and save products and vignettes for future shopping. The visual nature of the content helps with ideas for how to display your products, showrooms, or client projects. You can see what’s popular within your network of friends and clients and what’s trending.
4. It’s Easy and It Works
It is estimated that the half-life of a pin on Pinterest is 1,600 times longer than a post on Facebook, which means that your pins stay “top of mind” MUCH longer. In addition, consumer behavior is moving toward “discovery” instead of search, which means that users come to sites like Pinterest to browse and “discover” items before doing a Google search for a product.
Setting Up Your Pinterest Account:
1. Sign Up
Head to Pinterest.com and to join or log-in.
When you initially sign up, you’ll have the option to link either your Facebook or Twitter account with your Pinterest account. If you’re interested in connecting quickly with friends and followers on either platform, you should take this route. You can edit what information Pinterest has access to. If you prefer to start with just your e-mail address, you can always connect your social accounts later.
2. Create Your Profile
When you create your account, try to stick with a consistent username used for a Twitter or Instagram account. That will make it easier for anyone who follows you to find you via searching on Pinterest. It also helps to use the same profile photo—so people know it’s you. (For example: you can find us with @the_highboy on all social media platforms.)
When creating your account, you’ll also have the option to follow pinners you already know, like your friends and colleagues, and pinners you don’t know but share similar interests with. This will allow Pinterest to start building your feed, which is the home screen where you see all pins. You can always add or remove users or boards later.
3. Check Your Settings
Once your account is active take a look at your e-mail settings. When you first start pinning, it might be best to keep all the e-mail notifications on. It’s a great way to find new people to follow by seeing who likes, comments, or repins ideas from your boards. You can turn them off later if necessary.
How to Pin
1. Using a “Pin It” Button
The easiest way to add content from any site is to add the “Pin It” button to your web browser like Safari, Chrome, or Firefox. This is a quick and easy download that takes only minutes to set up. You can also add pins via the “Pin It” button directly on many sites.
2. Create a New Board
You can create a new board by pinning your first image (see below), or create a board first on which to pin items later. To create a new board, go to your Pinterest profile page and click the “Create a Board” button on the left of your current boards. Give your board a descriptive name so your followers know the types of pins they’ll find within, for example: “18th-Century Art”, “Mid-Century Modern Chairs”, or “Italian Inspiration.” Pinterest provides pre-set broad category options, so select whichever is closest or choose “other”.
3. Add a Pin
To add a pin to one of your boards, click on either the “Pin It” button in your bookmark bar, or an image on the website.
After selecting an image, you will have the option to: 1) choose which board to add the pin to and 2) write a description of the image. Select the board using the drop down menu in the window. If you want to add your pin to a new board, you can create one directly from the drop down menu as well.
If someone you’re following has added a pin that you like, you can save it to one of your boards as well. Simply hover over the image on Pinterest and three buttons will appear—Pin It, Send, and Like (heart button). To add that pin to your account click repin and follow the same steps you would to add a pin.
5. Like and Comment
If you like someone’s pin, but don’t want to add it to one of your own boards, you can just click Like. The original pinner will be able to see that you’ve liked it, but it won’t be added to the feed of pins that your followers see. You can also add comments to your pins or your friends’ pins in the comment box under the pin.
6. Upload a Pin
If you have a photo that you want to upload to Pinterest, you can do that by using the upload feature. Go to your main Pinterest feed and click the “+” button in the lower right-hand corner. From the screen that pops up you’ll be able to add a pin by pasting in the URL of a website or by uploading a photo from your computer.
1. Create Good Descriptions: Make sure to describe your pin thoroughly and clearly. Good descriptions will help you and your products get found easier when people search Pinterest or even just from Google.
2. Add #Hashtags: Hashtags make keywords linkable and searchable, which makes your photos easier to find. Adding hashtags to your Pinterest description will help people find your pins when they’re searching for keywords like #antique or #vintage. You can even create a unique hashtag for your store. We use #HighBoyart whenever promoting art from our site.
3. Include Links: Include a link to your pin whenever possible so that people can easily go back to the original source.
4. Space Out Your Pins: If you’d like to pin a lot of items, consider spreading them out a bit over days. It increases your chances to be seen by your followers at different times.
5. Organize Your Boards: Having a clean, easy-to-access profile page with your boards just makes it easier for anyone to find your pins.
6. Have Fun! Pinterest is about finding and curating inspiration, so have fun. Happy pinning!
