Modernism Week is finally here, and we’re ready to celebrate all things mid-century! With over 250 different events to attend, deciding what to see can feel like a daunting task. If you’re undecided, don’t fret. We’ve put together a list of the top 10 events you should see each day during Modernism Week.
1. Friday: 16th Annual Modernism Show Preview Reception
February 12 6pm – 9pm
If you want a sneak peak of the Modernism Show & Sale before it opens to the general public, this is the place to be. The preview reception is the biggest party during Modernism Week. If you’re looking for spectacular musical entertainment and a chance to shop your favorite styles before everyone else, stop by!
2. Saturday: Hendrick’s Cocktail Academy: An Interactive Mixology Event
Saturday February 12 3pm – 4:30pm
Learn the art of exceptional party-hosting at this fun mixology class, led by World Champion Mixologist and Hendrick’s Gin Ambassador, Mark Stoddard. It’s a great way to learn about cocktails while getting the opportunity to taste three different drinks yourself.
3. Sunday: Hollywood Designs on TV & Film, Presented by WestEdge Design Fair
Sunday February 12 1pm – 3pm
Movie-buffs and TV-lovers alike will enjoy this inside look in to some of Hollywood’s most beloved TV and film sets. Jeannine Oppewall, production designer of “LA Confidential” and “Catch Me If You Can,” and Ellen Brill SDSA, set decorator of “American Horror Story” and “Nip/Tuck” will be taking you on a journey to Tinsel Town, and showing you the designs that brought your favorite stories to life.
4. Monday: Retro Pinball Mania!
Monday February 15 6pm – 11pm
One of the best kept secrets of the mid-century modern revival is the fabulous Museum of Pinball. A hidden treasure, this museum brings back the nostalgia of arcades before they were filled with electronic screens. The pinball machines display gorgeous works of art, some of which are hand-painted and date back to the 1960’s. Mad Men-style cocktails will be served at an open bar during the event. Don’t miss out on your chance to have a blast with these retro treasures!
5. Tuesday: Disney’s Mid-century Modern
Tuesday February 16 12:30pm – 1:30pm
Not only was Walt Disney a major influencer in film and television, but he was also a strong advocate for modern architecture and design between the 1930’s and 1960’s. This event celebrates the mid-century modern designs that have been featured in Disney creations all over the world.
6. Wednesday: Premier Double Decker Architectural Bus Tour
Wednesday February 17 8:30am – 2pm
The Double Decker Architectural Bus Tours are one of Modernism Week’s signature events. This 2.5 hour tour allows sightseers the opportunity to experience Palm Spring’s commercial and residential architecture influenced by Desert Spanish and mid-century modern design movements. Sightseers will even have the opportunity to see the legendary Twin Palms estate–former home of Frank Sinatra. Multiple tours will be held throughout the week.
7. Thursday: Mad Men Affair at the Abernathy House
Thursday February 18 6pm – 8:30pm
This stylish party pays homage the the cultural icon, “Mad Men“, and its creators, designers, and actors at the spectacular Abernathy Residence. Enjoy the breathtaking architecture and décor and take tours inside the home, all the while enjoying cocktails and the smooth sounds of Bossa Nova music.
8. Friday: Frank Sinatra’s Neighborhood – The Movie Colony Historical Walking Tour
Friday February 19 9:30am – 12pm
The Movie Colony has been home to some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Tour the neighborhood where Tinsel Town’s brightest stars such Cary Grant, Jack Benny, Dinah Shore, and most famously, Frank Sinatra once lived. Homes in this neighborhood boast stunning mid-century Modern and Spanish Colonial Revival styles that will leave sightseers in awe.
9. Saturday: The Female Factor: Women in Design
Saturday February 20 3:30pm – 7:00pm
Join this discussion panel led by style experts Pamela Fiori and Steven Stolman as they celebrate superstar women who have made significant impacts to the world of design. An exclusive cocktail reception will follow the discussion panel. Space at this exciting panel is limited so make sure to reserve your spot early.
10. Sunday: The Christopher Kennedy Show House Wrap Party and Polynesian Luau
Sunday February 21 5pm – 8pm
Round off your week with savory tropical cocktails at a retro Polynesian luau. This is a place to sit back, relax, and toast another successful Modernism Week with at Toucan’s Tiki Lounge.
